Echoes of Form: classical shape, contemporary language

ALPI presents "Echoes of Form" at Thorvaldsen's Museum

ALPI is welcoming visitors to "Echoes of Form: classical shape, contemporary language," an installation designed by GamFratesi at Thorvaldsen's Museum in Copenhagen for 3daysofdesign. The display, with its direct connection to the museum interiors and Bertel Thorvaldsen's sculptures, is an exploration of the expressive potential of wood, showing surface, volume and narrative modulated in fascinating ways.
The installation begins with a sculptural reception desk, a symbolic greeting for entering guests. A counter-top of ALPI Xilo Walnut Striped is cradled by two geometrical volumes covered with ALPI Makassar Ebony, a graceful composition whose surface depth is given by grain and pattern.
The heart of the exhibition is an array of 14 shaped totems made of wood, standing on pedestals. Their abstract forms relate to the museum's architecture in a measured play of proportion and volume. Each piece features different types of ALPI veneer designed by international talents including nendo, Konstantin Grcic, Piero Lissoni, Estúdio Campana and GamFratesi. The sculpted shapes and smooth surfaces echo the setting in a contemporary way – balanced in form and sophisticated in substance.
"Echoes of Form" is the new instalment of a curatorial initiative begun by ALPI eight years ago to investigate new design languages by collaborating with creative auteurs who share an artistic sensibility with the material. Here, wood is interpreted technically and culturally to link past and present through craftsmanship and industrial process.
